The Omoda C5 SHS introduces a self-charging hybrid system to the local lineup.

With fuel costs currently skyrocketing, the idea of owning a hybrid or electric vehicle seems more sensible. This makes the timing of the local introduction of the Omoda C5 SHS (Super Hybrid System) particularly fitting.
The C5, which is also Omoda’s best-selling vehicle in South Africa, builds on that momentum by introducing the hybrid electric vehicle variant, offering an alternative for consumers seeking improved fuel efficiency without the infrastructure demands of fully electric vehicles.
At the core of the C5 SHS is a self-charging hybrid system that integrates a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, working together to optimise performance and reduce fuel consumption.
Unlike plug-in hybrids, the system requires no external charging, making it particularly relevant in a local context where charging infrastructure remains inconsistent outside major urban centres. From a market perspective, this positions the C5 SHS as a practical solution for long-distance drivers and road-trip-oriented consumers — an important consideration in a country where intercity travel remains a key part of everyday mobility.
Claimed fuel consumption comes in at just 4.9l/100km for the C5 SHS.

From a styling perspective, the C5 SHS is largely unchanged; however, several tell-tale signs are present. The 18-inch alloy wheels feature a more aerodynamic design, and at the rear is an HEV badge. Red brake calipers are also employed in the C5 SHS.
Inside, the C5 SHS features a more symmetrical dashboard layout along with a cleaner bridge-style centre console. These changes allow for a more ergonomically friendly cabin.
Some standard practical features include power-adjustable front seats with six-way adjustment, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist.

Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which works together with an electric motor to produce a combined system output of 165kW and 295Nm of torque. Notably, the C5 SHS is the only vehicle in its segment with a turbocharged hybridised setup. In and around town, the C5 SHS’s power delivery is brisk but progressive, which is welcome compared to a sudden surge of instant power.
With an estimated 1000km of driving range on offer, the C5 SHS is quite appealing, especially considering how Chinese vehicles have been perceived as having relatively high fuel consumption. During the launch drive in Gauteng, I saw an impressive return of around 4.8l/100km, which is just shy of the claimed 4.9l/100km figure.
It goes without saying, then, that the C5 SHS will further bridge the gap between internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and fully electric vehicles.
The Omoda C5 SHS will be priced at R469,900 for the first month as part of a launch celebration, with the official price set at R479,900 thereafter. Pricing includes a 5-year/75 000km service plan, a 5-year/150 000km factory warranty, and a 10-year/1 million km engine warranty linked to the first owner.
