The new Gautrain Driver’s Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) - which are located at the Midrand and the Centurion train stations - are now offering Gauteng motorists in the province a fast and efficient way to renew their drivers licences without the hassle of snaking long queues.

The Gautrain DLTCs at Midrand and Centurion are a partnership between the Gautrain and the Department of Transport, with an additional Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) office in Midrand also used.

These smart cashless centres make use of advanced technology to refine the vehicle licensing experience, drastically reducing waiting times, and guaranteeing a quick and convenient service.

The services offered at these new centres include the renewal of a driver’s licence card and a professional driving permit applications, as well as temporary driver’s licence, and payment of traffic fines.

At the GMA Centre in Midrand, motorists can also renew their licence discs, a service offering that will be rolled out to other Gautrain DLTCs at a later time to be announced.

Tasked with addressing the driver licence card renewal backlogs in Gauteng, the GMA launched the first smart DLTC at Midrand station in June 2022.

“Since then, we have assisted over 170,000 customers,” said GMA CEO Tshepo Kgobe.

The smart centres leverage cutting-edge technology to eliminate excessive wait times and paperwork, creating a fast and seamless experience for Gauteng motorists.

“Our streamlined processes and tech-driven solutions make licensing a breeze, something that was unheard of a few years ago”.

These centres are also entirely off-grid and solar-powered, ensuring continuity during power outages.

In response to the smart DLTCs' success, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT) appointed GMA to bring smart licensing centres closer to communities in Townships, Informal Settlements, and Hostels (TISH), launching the first such centre in Atteridgeville in March 2024.

There are plans to expand to other townships including Protea Glen, Mamelodi, and Mohlakeng in Randfontein.

Work is already underway to open a smart DLTC at the Gautrain Sandton Station in 2025.

To access services at the smart DLTCs, motorists must book an appointment through the National Administration Traffic Information System (NaTIS) online portal, walks-in are not allowed and cash payments are not accepted.
