The Sharks’ player depth has been stretched by a injuries and Springbok resting protocols, so coach John Plumtree is delighted to get back some Boks for their match against the Lions this weekend.

In particular, he is pleased to have Springbok captain Siya Kolisi back in the ranks and injecting enthusiasm.

“Siya is returning from his rest period and is very keen to get back into playing,” Plumtree said. “He has been a joy at training, and added a lot of energy and fun to the group.

“We are playing him off the bench and that is a good idea because of the leadership he will add in the second half. It is going to be a massive task up there (in Johannesburg) against a hungry team, and Siya will be important in the second half.”

Plumtree also welcomes back experienced Bok prop Vincent Koch and scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse.

“For a change, we have been able to pick a side with a fair amount of continuity and some nice experience on the bench. Jaden is nice and freshened up (from the Bok resting), so he is starting and it is always good to have Grant Williams playing off the bench.

“We are still missing Ox Nche and Eben Etzebeth, but it is great to have the experience of Vincent and Siya.”

Plumtree is giving a chance at lock to 24-year-old newcomer Deon Slabbert, who has come to the Sharks after impressing at the Pumas. He is massive at just over 2m and 118kg, and takes over from Corne Rahl.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what Deon Slabbert can do at lock. He had a nice cameo when we played in Cardiff, but picked up a concussion.”
