In a turbulent trading session on Tuesday, markets were rattled by the heavy capital expenditure and funding demands stemming from big tech stocks, particularly in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

Bianca Botes, Managing Director at Citadel Global said, "Investors' nerves were palpable, resulting in the S&P 500 barely managing to close in positive territory, while the NASDAQ experienced noticeable losses. The futures market reflected this caution, opening in the red as tech giants prepared to unveil their results today."

The negative sentiment extended beyond the United States into Asia, where the KOSPI index plummeted to a three-month low, necessitating the activation of its circuit breakers due to rapid declines.

Similarly, the Japanese Nikkei also found itself deep in the red, adding to the prevalent anxiety across global equity markets.

Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions continue to dominate headlines as efforts to resolve the ongoing Middle East conflict remain fragile.

"In financial markets, the oil price fell below the $85 per barrel threshold, reflecting some easing in energy costs, while gold prices receded nearly 0.5%, with trading recorded at $4,048 per ounce," Botes said.

"As the middle of the week approaches, all eyes are poised on the United States Federal Reserve's impending interest rate decision. The tone taken by the Fed will be crucial in shaping market sentiment, with investors keenly scrutinising any signals that might indicate future monetary policy shifts," Botes said.

Adding to the local economic concerns, the South African rand continues to struggle against major currencies, trading at R16.78 against the dollar, R19.08 against the euro, and R22.31 against the pound, indicating ongoing volatility and pressure for the nation’s economy.
