WATCH: Teko Modise challenges dating stereotypes: 'You need to date up'

Former soccer player Teko Modise has stirred conversation on social media after sharing candid thoughts about soccer players’ dating preferences and the stereotypes they face.

In a video clip circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the ex-PSL star reflected on how women have previously challenged footballers about who they choose to date.

“You’ll go around, greet a lady and they’ll talk to you and say to us: ‘you guys always date the same people. Same type, same looking. Like no guys, you need to date up. You need to date lawyers, chartered accountants, engineers.”

Dating preferences shaped by environment

Responding to the criticism, Modise explained that many footballers’ dating choices are influenced by their surroundings and lived experiences.

He also pointed to a lingering perception that soccer players are not intellectually inclined.

“We had a stigma that we are dom and that we just need to chase this round ball and that’s it. I sat there and there like 'okay sharp'. I may not be the brightest guy in the room but I have more opportunities than any other people that have played me in my era so how do I better myself by still opening opportunities for other guys,” said Modise.

Social media reacts

Modise’s remarks quickly gained traction online, with South Africans weighing in on the debate around class, career success and dating expectations.

Some users pushed back on the idea of “dating up”, arguing that financial expectations remain regardless of profession.

@ms_cheekbones said: “Wait till he learns that the lawyers and accountants still ask for money lol.”

Others drew parallels with trends in the entertainment industry.

Another user highlighted the uncertainty of football careers. 

@Kgosigadi_Mj said: “Sometimes those women themselves don’t want to date guys with 2 minute careers.”

While some pointed to global patterns.

@BasilNgidi commented: “I remember someone saying this about NBA players when asked why they all seem to date the same women. Over there it’s taken even further in that, there’s actually agencies that pick and choose certain women based on looks, race, etc, and they train them on etiquette and stuff.”

Life beyond football

Since retiring, Modise has transitioned into a successful career as a football analyst and fashion entrepreneur.

The former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder remains a prominent voice in South African sport and culture.

On the personal front, Modise was previously married to Felicia Modise from 2010 to 2013.

He was later linked to entrepreneur and finance graduate Koketso "Koki" Chipane.

The couple reportedly married in 2021 after a traditional ceremony in 2018 and share children together.

Recent reports suggest the pair have been living apart for over a year, fuelling speculation about a possible separation after they stopped featuring each other on social media.
