In the ever-changing world of technology, Checkers is stepping up once again. From collectable mini groceries to app-based delivery, the retailer is now making headlines with its new smart trolley innovation.
The Xpress Trolley, as it’s officially called, has recently been rolled out in select stores, and TikTokkers have already started putting it to the test during their grocery runs.
So, what exactly is this trolley, and how does it work?
The trolley is fitted with technology that allows customers to scan groceries themselves, pack them straight into bags, and pay without standing in the usual queues.
A digital built-in screen on the trolley shows the total basket amount while also giving product information and promotions tailored to the shopper.
One of its key features is built-in navigation, which directs customers to the exact aisle where items can be found. This feature is designed to save shoppers time by guiding them directly to the items they need.
The first rollout is limited, with ten smart trolleys at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell, Cape Town and another ten at Checkers Constantia.
It is reported that before this, the system was tested internally by staff to make sure it worked smoothly.
Shoppers begin by scanning their “Xtra Savings” card to activate the trolley. They then place their bags inside, scan each product before packing and pay the total amount on the trolley itself using a card connected to their Checkers Sixty60 account.
Once paid, a till slip is printed for a quick exit at the checkout point, where support staff are available if needed.
The Xpress Trolley is the first of its kind in South Africa and is designed to change how people shop.
