Durban has lost one of its culinary gems as Julio’s, the well-loved Portuguese restaurant located at Lagoon Drive Umhlanga Plaza, has officially closed its doors. The closure of this cherished establishment, known for its vibrant atmosphere and delectable cuisine, has sparked a wave of emotional reactions among its loyal patrons.

In a heartfelt social media announcement, the restaurant team expressed their gratitude, saying: “Dear patrons! We are so thankful to every one of you for your continuous support and appreciation throughout these years. It is with great sadness that we have to say goodbye to Julio’s Umhlanga, and it has been truly an honour serving you all. We will miss the laughter and joys of hearing the beautiful voices and enjoying watching you dance to live music. You have become patrons, friends, and then family. Thank you all. We will cherish every little moment.”

Many customers, who fondly recalled their special dining experiences, took to social media to express their dismay.

“We had so many special occasions here. I had no idea they were closing and now we missed the last dinner,” lamented one user.

Another added: “Oh no this is so sad. Where am I going to go for my comfort food?” while a third remarked: “Very sad indeed, I will miss the beautiful food.”

For those left with a craving for authentic Portuguese fare now that Julio’s has closed, there are several alternatives in and around Durban worth exploring:

  • Atasca: This restaurant, with locations in Westville, Pietermaritzburg, and Kloof, offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. Known for its authentic dishes that showcase fresh ingredients, Atasca delights guests with popular options like espetadas, prego rolls and flamed grilled chicken.
  • Petisco: Nestled in Umhlanga, Petisco serves traditional dishes that have been passed down through generations. Their menu features a wide range of seafood and hearty meat options, providing a genuine dining experience reminiscent of Lisbon's spirited culture.
  • Beira Alta: With two locations at Dolphin Coast and Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, Beira Alta embodies the fusion of Portuguese cuisine with a touch of African tradition. Their reputation for flame-grilled chicken and generous portions of seafood make this restaurant a must-visit for lovers of hearty meals.
