Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has all the attributes to become one of South African football's future leaders after his impressive performances alongside Ime Okon at the World Cup.
The young central defensive pairing has exceeded expectations during South Africa's run to the Round of 32, helping the side recover from an opening defeat to Mexico before securing qualification for the knockout stages.
Asked about the blossoming partnership between Mbokazi and Okon, Broos singled out the Chicago Fire defender in the MLS for special praise.
"Mbokazi is a very good player. He's young and he's making progression," Broos said at a press conference ahead of Sunday's Round of 32 clash against Canada in LA. "I see him now and I see him nearly one year ago and I think he becomes better and better."
The veteran Belgian believes the 20-year-old is ready to test himself at a higher level.
"I really hope that in the next months or year he should go to a bigger competition where he's more challenged and can become even better than he is already now."
Broos also backed Mbokazi to develop into one of the leaders of the national team.
"He's not only a good player, but he can be a leader later, certainly," he said. "I expect much from him in making a fantastic career."
The Bafana coach highlighted the youngster's all-round qualities, describing him as "strong, quick and good in passing", before suggesting South Africa's future at the heart of defence looks secure.
"With him and next to him two young players, I think the future of Bafana Bafana for central defenders is secured."
