If his newly shaved head did not already make Bafana Bafana's Mbekezeli Mbokazi resemble Hitman’s Agent 47, then the physically imposing defender completely deflating the match ball in the 76th minute against the Czech Republic with a thunderous strike certainly did.
Some onlookers might even start calling him the Francis Ngannou of football — a nod to the former UFC heavyweight champion who once recorded the world's most powerful punch, clocking in at nearly 100 horsepower.
The 20-year-old former Orlando Pirates star has consistently given South African fans reasons to cheer, but Thursday night's display of raw, unfiltered power was a staggering reminder of why he is widely regarded as a once-in-a-generation athletic talent.
Possessing the sheer muscle mass of a Mr Olympia contender, Mbokazi unleashed a ferocious first-time effort at goal after the ball was laid off to him from a late set-piece. His trademark strike thudded heavily into a Czech defender, but play was halted shortly afterwards when the referee noticed the ball had visibly deflated from the sheer impact of the boot, forcing an immediate replacement.
The KwaZulu-Natal-born defender has since grabbed global headlines, joining a mythic, microscopic list of footballers to ever legitimately burst or deflate a modern match ball through a standard strike.
To South African fans, however, this was not an isolated freak occurrence, but rather a continuation of the staggering physical feats the youngster has produced throughout his rapid rise. Ahead of the World Cup, Mbokazi scored an absolute screamer against Panama to rescue a 1-1 draw in an international friendly.
Prior to that, during a fiercely contested Premier Soccer League (PSL) match in November 2025, Mbokazi inadvertently knocked out Durban City's Joslin Kamatuka with an uncompromising clearance at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. It led to frightening scenes as pitchside paramedics stabilised Kamatuka on the turf before rushing him to hospital via an ambulance.
Yet, beneath the terrifying raw power, Mbokazi operates with a positional maturity and a cool head well beyond his years — qualities that have shone brightly on the high-pressure world stage. At just 20 years old, the centre-back is virtually guaranteed a flurry of contract offers from elite European suitor clubs looking for a physically imposing, lockdown defender after the tournament concludes.
While his brute strength captures the social media highlights, his elite ability to read the flow of opposition attacks and establish flawless defensive positioning remains his finest asset. During the broadcast of Bafana Bafana's stalemated battle with the Czech Republic, an American television commentator suggested that Mbokazi’s current stint in Major League Soccer (MLS) is rapidly reaching its expiration date.
"I think he'll play another 12 to 18 months here for Chicago Fire before the big European clubs come hunting for him," the commentator noted.
