Iran rescue chaotic draw against New Zealand as political tensions spill into Los Angeles

Iran twice battled back from behind to rescue a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday in a frenetic opening match of a World Cup campaign that has been utterly overshadowed by war, geopolitics, and civil unrest.

The Iranian team's very presence at the Los Angeles Stadium had long felt precarious, following months of severe military tension between their nation and the United States. The All Whites re-established their lead ten minutes into the second half. Motherwell attacker Just bagged his second of the afternoon following a crisp one-two with Wood, sparked by Liberato Cacace aggressively pinching possession on the halfway line.

Yet, New Zealand were pegged back once more just nine minutes later, as Mohebi's leaping header from a superb, curling Rezaeian cross glanced off the inside of the post to level the scores at 2-2.

The final half-hour of the contest saw a dominant Iran camp permanently on the front foot, but they were ultimately unable to engineer a winner due to a combination of erratic finishing and dogged, bodies-on-the-line New Zealand defending.

The unexpected stalemate heavily dents Iran's historic ambitions of progressing to the knockout stages for the very first time, though fellow Group G contenders Belgium and Egypt also played out a draw on Monday.
