Spain failed to find a way past an inspired Vozinha on Tuesday, as the 40-year-old goalkeeper secured a stunning 0-0 draw for World Cup debutants Cape Verde before being reduced to tears by his own heroics.
La Roja rolled into Georgia as one of the definitive pre-tournament favourites, with head coach Luis de la Fuente boldly boasting on the eve of the match that he commands the finest squad in the competition.
Yet, a Spanish side featuring Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, a Fabián Ruiz fresh from a second consecutive UEFA Champions League triumph with Paris Saint-Germain, and packed with the continental heavyweights who conquered Euro 2024 simply could not breach Cape Verde's dogged, deeply resolute defence.
Even the second-half introduction of Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal, making his highly anticipated return from injury, failed to break the deadlock as Vozinha masterfully marshalled his backline to a clean sheet that will live forever in African football folklore.
"I am very proud. For me, it is a massive honour to represent my country on this stage," an emotional Vozinha told reporters after the final whistle. "We are from a small nation. Our qualification route was incredibly difficult in a group alongside Cameroon and Libya, but we knew that if we strictly followed the coach's tactical plan, we had a genuine opportunity to compete.
"The dream has come true. We went toe-to-toe against Spain, one of the best teams in the world. We are over the moon and so proud of all the players and the people of Cape Verde."
Remarkably, Vozinha was only truly tested during a brief, frantic spell of Spanish pressure just before the half-time interval. He alertly tipped over a looping Mikel Oyarzabal header and got down sharply to smother Ferran Torres' low drive, before producing his finest moment of the afternoon — a spectacular, full-stretch claw to deny an Aymeric Laporte header.
His tears at the final whistle were provoked not only by the sheer magnitude of Cape Verde's sporting achievement, but by the poignant reality that he was unable to share the milestone with his closest family.
"I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and unfortunately they passed away a few years ago; they did absolutely everything for me in my life," he added.
"Also, my mum didn't manage to be here because of a visa issue. The finances for the visa processing didn't come together in time, and I would have loved for her to be in the stands. But I am still very happy, and so joyful for all the Cape Verdean people."
Vozinha's nomadic club career has seen him play journeyman across Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, and Slovakia before his latest move to Portugal. Following Tuesday's display, he officially commands a legion of global fans; in the space of just a few hours, his Instagram account ballooned from a modest 50,000 followers to over 4 million.
Cape Verde head coach Bubista paid a glowing tribute to his veteran shot-stopper, who finally reached the pinnacle of international football on the occasion of his 89th cap.
"He was completely overcome with emotion. He possesses so much experience and has sacrificed a great deal to reach this stage. Those were tears of pure resilience," Bubista asserted.
"He has spent many years anchoring this team. I normally do not like to single out individuals, but it was a truly great performance. He was the best player on the pitch, but our entire defensive unit was incredibly strong, and he was there when we needed him most."
