While national team photos are often routine affairs and rather boring, Norway opted for something far more ambitious.
The result is a dramatic scene featuring players dressed as Vikings, surrounded by shields, weapons, and traditional longships, set against a rugged coastal backdrop.
The image may look like something created with artificial intelligence, but the production was very much real.
The Norwegian Football Federation enlisted renowned British photographer David Yarrow to bring the concept to life.
The shoot took place on a private beach outside Oslo, where the 26-man squad was transformed into a modern-day Viking army through elaborate costumes, makeup and staging.
To complete the scene, elements inspired by Viking Valley in Gudvangen were incorporated into the production design, helping create a visual tribute to one of Norway's most famous historical eras.
According to Yarrow, the concept was inspired by the Vikings' voyage across the Atlantic, mirroring Norway's journey to the United States for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The photograph places the emphasis firmly on the collective identity of the team rather than any single player, although Manchester City striker Erling Haaland naturally stands out in full Viking attire, complete with sword and shield.
The Viking theme has resonated strongly with supporters.
Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness said the concept reflects values that remain important to the national team, including unity, resilience and togetherness.
Fans have embraced that message, with recent matches featuring coordinated chants and rowing-inspired celebrations in the stands.
The timing could hardly be better. Excitement is building across Norway as the country prepares for its first FIFA World Cup appearance in nearly three decades.
Norway will begin its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on June 16 in Foxborough, Massachusetts, before facing France and Senegal in the group stage.
While much of the attention will focus on what Haaland, Ødegaard and their teammates can achieve on the pitch, their Viking-inspired team photo has already become one of the standout moments of the tournament build-up.
