In the heart of South Africa’s dynamic retail landscape stands Andrew Soqinase, a driving force for affordability and accessibility in grocery shopping.

Growing up in the humble surroundings of Ladysmith in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Soqinase’s ascent from a Trainee Manager at Shoprite to the General Manager of Usave South Africa, managing over 500 no-frills discount stores and leading 6 000 employees, is a compelling narrative of passion, perseverance, and leadership.

Soqinase’s journey into retail was not a predetermined path.

After completing his studies in Advertising and Marketing, along with a postgraduate degree in Business Administration, he envisioned a career beyond the supermarket aisles.

However, everything changed in 2007 when he took his first step into the retail world at Shoprite in Estcourt.

“From the day I stepped into this role, I fell in love with retail,” he told Business Report.

That spark ignited a 16-year career that would see him grow into a role focused on helping income-sensitive customers maximise their budgets.

Today, he presides over a workforce of more than 6 000 employees, committed to delivering everyday essentials at affordable prices, particularly in underserved communities.

Under his leadership, Usave is not just a discount retailer, it is a lifeline for many South African households navigating financial constraints.

Within just six months in his initial role, his capabilities were recognised with promotions to Assistant Manager and subsequently Branch Manager at Checkers Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg.

His career continued to ascend through various managerial roles until he reached his current position, where he applies his extensive operational experience and insight into customer needs.

“I am very grateful that every day, through my work, I have an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life,” he said.

According to him, his leadership style emphasises a prioritisation of the customer experience, particularly the crucial decisions made by frontline staff that shape shopping encounters.

“There’s no meeting that starts or ends without us talking about the customer,” he said, underscoring the retail philosophy that places the consumer at the forefront of operational discussions.

Passion for developing others is central to Soqinase's approach as a leader.

"I’m passionate about coaching and creating opportunities for people to achieve their potential," he said.

His commitment to the personal and professional growth of his team is evident in significant operational advancements he has spearheaded, including a state-of-the-art cash handling and reporting system that reduced shortages by an astounding 80% and enhanced productivity.

Furthermore, his involvement in the national rollout of a new Point of Sale system marked a peak in collaborative and innovative efforts within the company.

Reflecting on success, he added, “It’s not defined by a single achievement. It’s a combination of small things that require discipline and focus.”

When not leading the charge at Usave, Soqinase finds solace and rejuvenation in outdoor activities like cycling and jogging, alongside indulging in family gatherings and cheering for the Springboks during weekend braais.

His well-rounded life adds depth to his role as a leader, embodying the ethos of a balanced lifestyle that many aspire to achieve.

For the younger generation eager to navigate the retail landscape, Soqinase offered a straightforward yet profound piece of advice, “Dream big and stay curious. Find what you like and develop a passion for it. You are the pilot of your future.”

These words resonate as a reminder that in a rapidly evolving industry, a willingness to learn and grow remains a vital asset.
