When Dr. Judey Pretorius founded Biomedical Emporium, she set out to change the way people think about skincare.
What began as a fascination with the human body’s cellular processes evolved into a pioneering biotechnology company focused on healing, regeneration, and confidence.
From a young age, Dr. Judey was captivated by how every cell and molecule in the body worked together to sustain life.
“I was always fascinated by the fact that the answers to health, beauty, and longevity lie not on the surface, but within the microscopic systems of the body,” she said.
“During my studies in biotechnology and medical sciences, I realised that genetics and molecular biology could be applied not only to treat disease, but to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate.”
Her passion took a more defined shape during her early research years.
She saw firsthand how many patients suffering from burns, chronic wounds, or chemotherapy-related side effects lacked effective treatment options.
“There was a gap between laboratory science and what was available to people in real life. I wanted to bridge that gap by translating complex discoveries into tangible products that could truly change lives,” she explained.
That drive led to the creation of Biomedical Emporium, a company dedicated to merging science with compassion.
“My initial vision was to develop skincare that went beyond cosmetics. I wanted to create formulations that actively contribute to cellular repair and regeneration,” said Dr. Judey.
Over time, that vision evolved into a broader mission to pioneer scientific skincare that addresses both medical and aesthetic concerns while promoting long-term skin health.
Building a biotechnology business in South Africa came with challenges.
Establishing laboratories and earning consumer trust in a market dominated by traditional beauty brands required perseverance and scientific integrity.
“Funding scientific innovation in South Africa can be difficult, but through collaboration and persistence, we built something meaningful,” she said.
What set Biomedical Emporium apart was its evidence-based approach.
Every product was formulated using bioengineered peptides that target specific cellular functions to promote healing.
“Peptides are like messengers between skin cells,” Dr. Judey said.
“They tell the skin to produce collagen and elastin, which are essential for strength and elasticity. Our formulations stimulate the body’s natural repair mechanisms to restore balance and improve overall skin health.”
Her products have helped patients recovering from chemotherapy, burn injuries, and diabetic wounds.
“I’ve seen patients who suffered severe burns regain their confidence after their skin healed beautifully using our formulations,” she recalled.
“For cancer patients, being able to soothe the effects of treatment and restore comfort is deeply rewarding. Those are the moments that remind me why I started this journey. It is more than skincare; it is science serving humanity.”
Dr. Judey’s impact extends beyond the laboratory.
She built accredited laboratories in South Africa and Mauritius, enabling in-house research and collaboration with global scientists and medical experts.
“Our labs are the heart of Biomedical Emporium. They give us control over every stage of product development, ensuring precision, quality, and safety,” she said.
A self-described academic at heart, Dr. Judey balanced her dual roles as scientist and entrepreneur through passion and structure.
“I spend my mornings in research and my afternoons in strategy and mentorship. I lecture on skin histology, biochemistry, and medical aesthetics, and I regularly present at international conferences,” she said. “Education and collaboration are key to progress.”
As a woman leading a biotechnology company, she also recognised the importance of representation.
“Leadership requires resilience and conviction. As women, we often have to prove that expertise and empathy can coexist. I hope my journey shows that women can lead successfully in science and business,” she said
Her work in regenerative medicine and cell therapy is shaping the future of skincare.
“Regenerative medicine is transforming what is possible. By understanding the body’s repair mechanisms, we can accelerate healing and restore function,” she said.
“The line between medical treatment and skincare will continue to blur as consumers demand products that are both effective and evidence-based.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Judey’s goal is to position Biomedical Emporium as a global leader in regenerative biotechnology while continuing to make science accessible.
“Science should not be a privilege,” she said. “It should serve everyone, regardless of geography or background.”
For her, success lies in the intersection of discovery, business growth, and impact.
“When a patient tells me that our products helped them regain confidence or comfort, that is the greatest reward,” she said.
Her message to aspiring scientists and entrepreneurs is simple but powerful: “Believe in the power of your ideas, even when others cannot see your vision yet. Science is a journey of persistence and discovery. Your curiosity and compassion are your greatest strengths — use them boldly and never underestimate your ability to change the world.”
