On the eve of its scheduled theatrical release in Kuwait, “Wicked” was removed from cinema listings.

The ban, reportedly implemented by the Kuwaiti Information Ministry, has yet to be officially explained, but speculation suggests the inclusion of an LGBTQ character may have been a contributing factor.

This follows a trend in Kuwait, where Hollywood films like “Barbie” were previously banned to uphold "public ethics“.

This ban occurred alongside similar actions in Lebanon, where authorities argued the film promoted homosexuality and gender transformation.

Culture Minister Mohammad Mortada said it contradicts "moral and religious values as well as the principles of Lebanon" and "promotes homosexuality and sexual transformation".

The movie also "promotes sexual deviance and transsexuality," the minister said.

“Wicked”, the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway show directed by Jon M. Chu, premiered in the US and Canada last week.

Starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the film also features a star-studded cast including Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

The ban has left Kuwaiti fans frustrated, with many taking to social media to express their opinions.
