South African music sensation Tyla is closing the year on a high note with eight nominations at the Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs).

Hosted by Marriott Bonvoy, the BBMAs is a ceremony hosted by “Billboard,” a publication covering the music business and a music popularity chart- to honour artists exceptional work throughout the year.

The nominees for this year’s BBMAs were announced on Monday, November 25, in Los Angeles.

Tyla was nominated for Top R&B Artist, Top Afrobeats Artist, Top R&B Song, Top R&B Album and Top R&B Female Artist Awards.

The multi-award-winning star made history as the first artist in the BBMAs to be nominated three times in a single category.

Her songs “Water”, “Truth or Dare” and “Jump” were all nominated for the Top Afrobeats Song Award.

The Tigers (Tyla’s fans) were super excited about the nominations because after working so hard all year, it was fitting for their favourite to be nominated.

“Tyla really doesn’t remove her pretty foot from people's necks. She is not letting y'all breathe, her only competition is herself and herself only” said @sadestyla.

Another supporter, @Badboychike, said: “I don't think Africa has ever experienced this level of success in a debut year like Tyla has been doing in 2024.

“Back-to-back nominations and awards all in her debut year are definitely the biggest Africa has ever seen. Her hard work is definitely paying off, super proud of her.”

Meanwhile, Ayra Starr’s fans are not quite pleased that their favourite didn’t receive a single nomination. Some even accused Tyla’s team of copying Starr’s swag.

“Chai, Ayra Starr would’ve hacked the American market if she was light-skinned.  Tyla and her team looked at Ayra and did copy and paste of her swag, looks and drips,” said @47kasz.

However, the Tigers could not be bothered because Tyla has been receiving some hate not only from certain Nigerians but Americans too. However, that doesn’t stop her from winning.

In fact, this week, she’s not only celebrating the BBMAs nominations but is also making it to the top 10 of the most streamed 2024 female albums on Spotify.

Zach Bryan, Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen and Sabrina Carpenter are among the artists leading the 2024 Billboard Music Awards nominees, with Swift facing off against Drake to compete for the most all-time wins.

The 2024 Billboard Music Awards will air on December 12.
