It has filled my heart with such joy to see David Beckham, my all-time favourite footballer and sports star, being honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Manchester United legend might be retired from the beautiful game, but he is still an instrumental figure in the football world as the president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF, where football icons such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets currently ply their trade.
Becks, as his legions of worldwide fans refer to him, is also the co-owner of Salford City F.C., and he continues to offer his football insights on shows such as CBS Sports' UEFA Champions League coverage, where he has appeared as a pundit and guest analyst alongside some of the game’s biggest names.
And with the 2026 Fifa World Cup currently taking place across the United States, Mexico and Canada, the 51-year-old superstar has added yet another accolade to his name.
On Friday, June 12, he received the 2,849th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Sports Entertainment category. This is in recognition of his achievements on the pitch as well as the former footballer’s role in elevating the game in America through his time with the LA Galaxy and his co-ownership of Inter Miami CF.
The ceremony, which took place at 6819 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, was an emotional occasion as the sporting icon’s family - including his wife Victoria Beckham, his daughter Harper Beckham, and his sons Cruz and Romeo Beckham - were all in attendance.
Although his eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, was not there to support his father, the family still appeared upbeat and thrilled at David’s latest accolade.
Visibly emotional during his acceptance speech and having to compose himself at several points, David described the recognition as “surreal” and said: “I grew up in the East End of London, a long way from Hollywood.”
He also reflected on being a working-class child whose biggest dream was simply to play football, adding that he could never have imagined one day receiving a star on one of the world’s most famous pavements.
David then thanked his family for their support throughout his life and career, including his parents and sisters.
“My greatest achievement is making my children proud.”
He added, “Kids, I hope you bring my grandchildren here one day and tell them about a boy who dreamed big.”
He also thanked his wife, saying: “Victoria, my amazing wife, without whom none of this would be possible or enjoyable.”
Meanwhile, Victoria, true to her trademark sense of humour, opened her address with a joke: “Naturally, I assumed I was coming here today to receive my star for my part in that iconic cult-classic, 'Spice World: The Movie'.”
She then became more heartfelt, describing the occasion as “so special,” as she praised her husband’s kindness, loyalty, dedication to the people he loves, and his relentless work ethic.
Meanwhile, David’s close friend, Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise, also attended the ceremony and gave a speech.
During his address, Cruise praised Beckham’s character, saying that despite all his success, “Nobody deserves a star more.”
He added that David’s achievements had never changed who he was as a person.
David later joked that standing beside Cruise was “mind-blowing” because he had grown up idolising action heroes.
He also revealed that his and Victoria’s first movie date was watching "Jerry Maguire", starring Cruise, calling it a “full circle moment.”
Unlike the traditional red carpet often associated with Hollywood events, the unveiling reportedly featured a green, football-inspired carpet, which reflected David’s sporting legacy. The timing also coincided with celebrations around the World Cup in North America.
Reports described the mood as celebratory, affectionate and nostalgic, with Beckham appearing genuinely overwhelmed by the honour.
While David has won league titles in four countries, captained the England national team, and built a global brand, he repeatedly returned to one theme during the ceremony: family.
Rather than focusing on trophies or fame, his speech centred on gratitude, parenthood, and the hope that his family’s pride in him would outlast any professional achievement.
For someone who has spent decades in the public eye, that appeared to be the part of the honour that affected him most.
Beyond Hollywood and the Walk of Fame, his name continues to be linked with two defining markers of modern success - a long-anticipated knighthood and his growing billionaire status.
Having already been appointed an OBE in 2003 for services to football, he has for years been the subject of ongoing public and media speculation about when he might finally be recognised as “Sir David Beckham”, given his enduring global influence both on and off the pitch.
In more recent years, that legacy has expanded even further, with David reportedly joining the ranks of sports-turned-business billionaires through his football ventures, brand partnerships and ownership stakes, most notably with Inter Miami CF.
Together, his financial success and continued cultural impact only reinforce the sense that his story extends far beyond football, cementing him as one of the most influential sporting figures of his generation.
