Kaya 959 suspends Sol Phenduka with immediate effect

Commercial radio station Kaya 959 has confirmed that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect.

In a statement, Kaya959 explained that the step had been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently under way.

"The station is committed to following due process, and no further details will be shared at this stage. Updates will be provided once the internal process has been concluded and a final decision has been reached."

The statement did not share the reason behind the suspension, which has come a surprise to fans and listeners.

The “Podcast and Chill with MacG” co-host joined the station, three years ago with seasoned radio host Dineo Ranaka on the station’s breakfast show. The duo took over Thomas Msengana and Skhumba Hlophe’s breakfast slot on Kaya 959.

Ranaka left the station in 2023. Phenduka currently hosts the breakfast show with Sizwe Dhlomo.

Phenduka's journey on the station took time to ease in during his first few months on the airwaves with Ranaka, listeners had complained that Ranaka overpowered Phenduka on the show.

The social media streets are even referring to Phenduka as the “traffic guy”, because he just can’t get a word in without being disrupted by Ranaka.

Phenduka's fans were also worried that him joining a commercial radio station would mean the end of his podcast days, but he made it clear that he would not be quitting “Podcast and Chill with MacG”.

“I will continue co-hosting Podcast and Chill with MacG as agreed with the Kaya959 management. This alone is a privilege, as it tells me that I am not being dictated to,” shared Phenduka in 2022.

“I see this as a great start to a fulfilling career. I still see my time at the podcast as my career highlight.
