Johannesburg - Pikitup was due to embark on a protected strike today called by Cosatu to mark the International Day for Decent Work.

The utility says that all its services - household refuse collection, recyclables, bulk, dailies and landfill sites - might be negatively impacted by the national march. But contingency plans have been put in place.

Spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said it was anticipated that the majority of Pikitup’s workforce who were members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union and a Cosatu-affiliated union might heed the call to join the march.

Residents and business owners whose collection day falls on Fridays should put out their waste as normal.

“In case waste is not collected today due to this march, Pikitup has a contingency plan to ensure that this inconvenience is sorted out tomorrow.

“We, therefore, appeal to residents and business owners to put out their bins for collection on Saturday,” he said.

Pikitup is also urging residents and business owners to be responsible and to desist from illegally dumping waste by utilising the strategically located 42 garden sites to dispose of small quantities of any form of waste, free of charge.

All these garden sites will be open from 8am to 1pm tomorrow.
