Johannesburg - Eskom has assured South Africans they will enjoy a candlelit dinner tonight: it is implementing load shedding until 10pm.

It announced late yesterday that it would be implementing stage 2 load shedding from 8am.

The announcement came as a surprise as Eskom had issued upbeat statements earlier yesterday, promising a weekend of electricity bliss as its generators were performing “at their optimum”.

But love, after all, hurts.

“The electricity supply system is vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units are out of service due to planned and unplanned outages. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” it said.

Eskom would use the weekend to build up diesel stocks and dam water levels for open-cycle gas turbines and pumped storage schemes.
