Johannesburg - IT WAS meant to be a media conference about the Communication Workers Union’s response to the laying off of its members at Telkom and the Post Office, plus the farce around the SABC board.

But the briefing exposed the CWU’s partial backing of a faction within the SABC, notably its embattled chief operations officer (COO), Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

“We are saying he should be appointed as a COO (by the interim board). We feel he is experienced in the position and understands the issues of the workers,” said the CWU’s deputy president, Clyde Mervin, when quizzed on the union’s stance on the dissolution of the board.

“There are people who are certified but can’t perform their duties, and we believe he has proved that (he can perform).

We believe that experience counts,” Mervin said yesterday.

He was flanked by the CWU general secretary, Thabo Mogalane.

He said the union represented the majority of workers at the SABC.
