The holiday or silly season is here, exams are over, and schools are closed.
To some parents, the relief is not over, matric pupils after a hard year will flock to the Matric rage or a week spree. My appeal to parents; know where your children are during the holiday season.
The rush to the coast and inland for the annual holiday will begin. Sadly the death toll will also begin, because of negligent and drunk driving. Safe driving starts behind the wheel and making sure the car is in good condition. One has to be careful, not to speed, overtake on blind rise or drive recklessly.
Even if you do all this it is only half the battle, remember we need to consider other drivers and pedestrians who can make you a statistic.
My appeal to the law enforcement agencies is critical, high visibility, roadblocks, and spot checks on the roadworthiness of vehicles are a must.
Road deaths in our country are one of the highest in the world. Year after year, it's the same and we meekly accept it.
All this is because of bad driving. There has to be zero tolerance for bad driving.
We don't need new laws, just enforce the old ones more strictly. Bad drivers need to be prevented from getting behind the wheel, and lose their licences, and if necessary or be jailed.
It is time our country takes a more serious approach to road safety. If this is given priority I am sure there will be fewer accidents and a pleasure to be on the roads. Let every motorist and pedestrian make a difference this year. Happy Holidays.
