A ROBBERY suspect was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning after he allegedly robbed an elderly man near the Grey Street area and was later arrested near the Hollywood Greyville Racecourse in Greyville.

A joint effort by the private security company Ensure Security and other law-enforcement authorities led to the arrest of the suspect, who was later handed over to the police.

In a statement released by Ensure Security, the company said: “At approximately 8am on Tuesday, an alert was received over numerous WhatsApp groups about a robbery that occurred in the Grey Street area.”

After the incident, security teams, which included Ensure Security's National Command Centre based at Hollywood Greyville Racecourse and the tactical intervention unit responded to the distress call.

“Following a short foot chase, the suspect was apprehended and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing,” read the statement.

He was later positively identified by the victim and detained accordingly.

He was yet to appear in court.

In another separate incident, two house robbery and kidnapping suspects were arrested following a joint effort by law enforcement authorities and private security in Durban over the weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said provincial police arrested two suspects in Dassenhoek and Beier, near the Westmead taxi rank for possession of suspect stolen property, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Netshiunda said reports indicate the suspects accosted the family, robbed them of belongings and forced three family members to leave with them.

“An intensive investigation led the police to Dassenhoek and Beier near Westmead taxi rank where the suspects were arrested,” Netshiunda said.

The suspects were expected to appear in Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The suspects made ransom demands using a stolen cellphone, prompting a multi-agency response.
