Northern Durban residents prepare for 24-hour water outage due to maintenance

In a move to bolster water infrastructure, the eThekwini Municipality has announced that residents in northern Durban should prepare for a 24-hour water outage commencing in the early hours of Thursday. 

From 2 am on Thursday until 2 am on Friday, the Northern Aqueduct will be temporarily shut down for critical maintenance work aimed at repairing leaks and ensuring the efficient operation of this vital water supply system.

As maintenance teams begin their work, they will focus on addressing multiple leaks along the trunk pipeline, replacing faulty air valves, and conducting thorough pressure tests on the system. 

This extensive work is necessary to enhance the reliability and safety of the water supply for the many communities that rely on this essential resource.

The shutdown is expected to affect a large number of regions, including but not limited to Durban North, Newlands, Umhlanga, Phoenix, Cornubia, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Inanda, and Ottawa. 

As the city prepares for this crucial upgrade, officials have urged residents to store sufficient water in advance and to use it sparingly once supply is restored.

Families in the affected areas are encouraged to remain aware of the locations where service interruptions will occur. 

A comprehensive list of the communities affected includes:

• Phoenix: Mount Edgecombe Hospital, Mount Edgecombe Estate, Broadlands, Southgate, Stonebridge, Clayfield, Campbells Town, and Greenbury.
• Umhlanga: Umhlanga CBD and La Lucia, along with areas such as Hawaan Forest and Blackburn Village.
• KwaMashu: Sections A to N across multiple reservoirs, including KwaMashu 1, 2, and 3, and numerous areas in Ntuzuma.
• Newlands: Several subdivisions, including Newlands East, Briardale, and V.N. Naik School.
• Additional communities: Mountview, Trenance Park, Effingham, and more across northern Durban.

Once the maintenance work is completed, water will be restored gradually as reservoirs refill and pressure is reinstated in the system. Residents are urged to remain patient, as the restoration process may take some time after the work is finalised.

Officials have also noted that proactive measures are being taken to mitigate disruptions. 

By addressing critical pipeline issues currently present in the infrastructure, the municipality aims to prevent further inconveniences in the future, ensuring a more reliable and efficient water supply for the communities of northern Durban.
