Displaying their manufacturing prowess, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has announced the production of its 500 000th right-hand-drive Polo intended for export.

The landmark vehicle, dressed in Crystal Ice Blue, is bound for the United Kingdom, one of VWGA’s foremost export destinations.

The Group said that this milestone is not merely a number; it represents the dedication and skill of countless South African workers at the Kariega plant, which has been the birthplace of the Polo since 2021.

Plant Kariega has a rich history of production spanning over 30 years, during which it has rolled out four generations of the Polo. Each vehicle is the result of a rigorous assembly process, taking an average of three days and the collaboration of 1 985 skilled hands. With approximately 1 400 individual parts converging in harmony, the Polo's production is a testament to industrial craftsmanship and engineering excellence.

The Polo’s significance to VWGA is amplified by its new status as the sole global exporter to 38 international markets as of 2024.

This capability cements the plant's role in Volkswagen's global strategy, and the current incarnation of the Polo has already proven its mettle, capturing the title of “Best Small Car” in the prestigious 50th edition of the Auto Motor und Sport Best Cars reader poll.

Additionally, the Polo was recently awarded the top spot in CAR's Small Cars category for its 2026 Top 12 Best Buys list.

Locally, the Polo continues to be a top choice amongst South African consumers. Since the inception of Polo production at the Kariega facility, a staggering 2 044 761 units have rolled off the assembly line, with 596 631 sold domestically and 1 448 130 exported. The current facelift model now accounts for an impressive 51.2% of all Polo exports since 1996, highlighting its global appeal and sustained popularity.

Germany has emerged as VWGA’s largest export market for the Polo, with 124 711 vehicles shipped between 2020 and 2026, closely trailed by the United Kingdom with 113 171 units. This dynamic demonstrates not only the Polo's enduring desirability but also the robust international relationships forged through decades of reliable production.

As VWGA looks to the future, the Group stated that 2026 promises to be a year of celebration, marking both 75 years of vehicle production in South Africa and three decades of Polo manufacturing in Kariega.

Ulrich Schwabe, VWGA Production Director, said, “Reaching the milestone of producing the 500 000th current generation Polo is a proud moment for our Production and Logistics team. This milestone shows the hard work, skill, and dedication of every employee at Plant Kariega. Our teams are the reason the Polo continues to shine, both here at home and across the world.”
