Southern Palladium has strengthened its development capabilities with the appointment of seasoned mining executive Mark Humphery as Project Manager for its flagship Bengwenyama Project in South Africa.
The move comes at a critical juncture for the company as the platinum group metals (PGM) project, located on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, transitions from study phases toward full-scale development.
Humphery, a mechanical engineer with more than 28 years of global mining experience, will report directly to managing director Johan Odendaal. He will be based on-site near Steelpoort, where he will oversee and coordinate development activities.
His appointment is widely seen as a strategic step to deepen the company’s execution capacity as it advances its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) and prepares for construction.
Southern Palladium indicated that Humphery’s experience across the full mining project lifecycle — from feasibility and engineering design to construction and commissioning — will be key in driving the project forward.
At Bengwenyama, Humphery will work closely with exploration manager Uwe Engelmann on the ongoing drilling programme. This work is focused on confirming geotechnical parameters required for the design of a proposed box cut and underground decline, which will provide access to the orebody.
He will also play a central role in supporting the DFS process being undertaken in collaboration with mining consultancy Minxcon. His responsibilities will include contributing technical and operational input to ensure the study is robust and aligned with future development plans.
Beyond technical execution, Humphery is expected to engage closely with local stakeholders, including community relations teams and the Bengwenyama community leadership.
The project has a strong community component, with the Bengwenyama community holding a 30% stake, underscoring the importance of inclusive development and stakeholder alignment.
Odendaal welcomed the appointment, describing it as a significant boost to the company’s leadership as it moves into a more execution-focused phase.
“We are pleased to welcome Mark to the Southern Palladium team at a pivotal stage in the development of the Bengwenyama Project. His appointment significantly strengthens our management bench and positions the Company to execute effectively as we transition from study phases into full project development,” Odendaal said.
“Mark brings a proven track record of delivering mining projects through feasibility, construction and execution. His experience in managing engineering, procurement and construction activities will be instrumental as we advance our Definitive Feasibility Study and position Bengwenyama for development.”
The company also indicated that further strengthening of the project team is underway, with recruitment in progress for an underground manager who will report to Humphery.
Meanwhile, Southern Palladium provided an update on regulatory progress, noting that the Bengwenyama Mining Right is awaiting final approval from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
The company expressed confidence that it has met all statutory requirements under South Africa’s mining legislation and expects the right to be granted.
The anticipated approval is a key milestone that would clear the way for development to proceed, positioning Bengwenyama as a future contributor to South Africa’s PGM sector.
With a strengthened leadership team, advancing technical studies and strong community backing, Southern Palladium appears to be laying the groundwork for the next phase of growth, as it seeks to unlock the value of one of the country’s emerging platinum assets.
