Residents together with the DA in the Western Cape’s Select Committee for Security and Justice are calling for the driver of the R3 million McLaren crash in Sea Point to face the long-arm of the law as police sit with video footage as evidence.

Police in turn have asked the public to allow the detective to fully complete his investigation and not to interfere with the case, after allegations surfaced that an undisclosed amount of cash was found inside the vehicle and the registration, questionable.

Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, said while they were aware of the allegations being made, they asked the public to be mindful as the case could be handed to the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

"A reckless and negligent driving case is being investigated, as in this case where the driver was taken to hospital by ambulance, for medical treatment due to his injuries at the time. No arrest has been made as yet,” he said.

“Our plea at this stage is simply that we allow the investigating officer to complete the investigation unhindered in a bid not to be distracted.

"The investigating officer will finish his investigations, and will get all outstanding reports.

"The matter will then be referred to the Senior State Prosecutor for decision and further instruction.”

A week ago, the McLaren 570S filmed on CCTV at a high speed was believed to have reached approximately 200 km/h and crashed along High Level Road.

The driver, identified as Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, also known as 3GAR, took to his Instagram account following the accident, where he posted images of his bloodied face and thanked God for sparing his life and claimed that he was avoiding a homeless person when the accident took place.

He also asked for prayers for the passenger, who was injured during the crash.

The Cape Argus left a message via his Instagram account for his response.

Nicholas Gotsell, MP and Select Committee for Security and Justice member, said they called for prosecution.

“Whilst security companies have this week released video footage of the accident, clearly showing that the vehicle moved at an excessive speed through a suburban area before it lost control, crashed into a curb and hit a boundary wall, the driver – a rapper who lives in Sea Point – now alleges on social media that he swerved for a homeless person and that the videos were edited."

The incident comes just weeks after dental surgeon from the Eastern Cape, Dr Ncumisa Mdlokolo, was tragically killed by a speeding Ferrari while walking with her sister in Buitengracht Street.

The driver, David Polet, is accused of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol and was arrested and charged and granted bail of R10 000 by the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.

Resident, Grant Richardson, who has been lobbying for years for action  on dangerous supercar drag racing, said they were frustrated with the police’s slow response in arresting the driver.

“This would serve as a warning and possible deterrent to those who willfully chose to drive recklessly.”
