The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has confirmed the key dates for the 2026 tax filing season, alongside a set of system changes aimed at making tax submissions faster and more straightforward for individuals.
According to the revenue service, the filing periods are structured to support its auto-assessment system, which uses third-party data from employers, banks, medical schemes and other institutions to pre-fill taxpayer information and reduce manual filing requirements.
Auto Assessments (1–12 July 2026)
If you receive an auto assessment from SARS:
Non-Provisional Individuals
13 July – 23 October 2026
Do not wait until the last minute.
Provisional Taxpayers and Trusts
13 July 2026 – 22 January 2027
You have a longer filing period, but early preparation is key:
According to the South African Revenue Service, the 2026 filing season will include several changes aimed at simplifying tax submissions and reducing errors.
These include more pre-filled taxpayer information, simplified return questions, and improved guidance on residency details. SARS will also introduce a drop-down list for medical aid selection to reduce mistakes.
Taxpayers will be able to access key documents via WhatsApp, while the updated eFiling system, SARS eFiling, offers a redesigned interface with faster navigation and clearer alerts.
SARS said a new verification feature will also help identify issues earlier in the filing process.
The revenue service has also urged taxpayers to ensure their personal and banking details are up to date ahead of the filing season.
"This year, we will again issue auto-assessments to taxpayers whose tax affairs are less complicated. If you are in agreement with your auto-assessment, then there is no need to ‘accept’ the assessment. If a refund is due to you, it will automatically be paid into your bank account," the revenue service said.
