O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) is forging ahead with its ambitious R14.5 billion five-year Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) programme, aimed at modernising infrastructure, enhancing operational reliability, and ultimately delivering a world-class experience for travellers.

The current phase of this extensive upgrade is strategically focused on high-impact passenger areas within the airport.

Visitors can look forward to significant improvements, including refurbished escalators and travelators, new ergonomic seating designed for comfort, and enhanced wayfinding signage that makes navigation smoother.

Additionally, durable tiling is set to replace old carpets at all international boarding gates, resulting in a cleaner and more contemporary look.

In a direct response to passenger needs, ORTIA has prioritised the refurbishment of terminal ablution facilities, a move that highlights the airport’s commitment to meet and exceed user expectations.

“At O.R. Tambo International Airport, we listen to our passengers. This programme directly addresses their expectations for facility standards, delivering infrastructure that meets global benchmarks,” stated Regional General Manager of ORTIA, Jabu Khambule.

Following a brief pause due to the G20 Leaders’ Summit and the festive peak, construction work has resumed at full capacity.

Notably, state-of-the-art ablution facilities are now open to the public on the Ground Floor (Domestic Arrivals) and the Domestic Departures area, located near Central Security. These facilities feature premium finishes that prioritise hygiene and comfort for passengers.

The first phase of the ablution refurbishment project kicked off in June last year, and is projected for completion by the end of March 2026.

“When phase 1 is completed, 90 individual toilets will be modernised,” explained Khambule.

Phase 2 of the project, which aims to revamp an impressive 780 individual toilets, is scheduled to commence in July 2026.

“Our planning will ensure minimal inconvenience to our valued passengers,” he added, reassuring travellers during this period of improvement.
